PTE Exam Day: What to Expect, What to Bring and Checklist

Before You Leave Home

Plan to arrive at the test centre at least 30 minutes early. Late arrivals may be refused entry with no refund, so build in extra time for traffic or transport delays.

Eat a proper meal beforehand. The test runs about 2 hours with no scheduled break, so you want steady energy. Avoid too much caffeine, which can make you jittery during Speaking tasks.

What to Bring to the PTE Exam

The single most important item is valid identification.

• A valid passport is the standard and most widely accepted ID. The name must exactly match your booking.
• Some centres in certain countries accept other government photo ID, but a passport is the safest choice. Confirm the accepted ID for your country when you book.

You generally do not need to bring anything else. The centre provides everything required for the test itself.

What You Cannot Bring In

Test centres have strict security. Personal items are stored in a locker outside the test room. You typically cannot take in:

• Phones, smartwatches, or any electronic devices
• Bags, wallets, and notes
• Food, drinks, and pens
• Hats, scarves, and outerwear (with reasonable exceptions for religious dress)

The Check-In Process

When you arrive, the centre staff will:

2. Take a digital photograph for your score report.
3. Capture a palm vein scan or similar biometric, depending on the centre.
4. Ask you to store all personal belongings in a locker.
5. Provide an erasable noteboard and marker for notes.
6. Escort you to your assigned computer station.

This process is routine. Follow the staff instructions and you will be at your desk in a few minutes.

Inside the Test Room

You will sit at an individual computer station with a headset. Other test takers may be sitting nearby taking different exams, so the room can have background activity. The headset reduces noise, and your microphone is separate.

A few things to know:

• You will do a microphone check before Speaking tasks. Speak clearly into the mic at a natural volume.
• The headset can usually be adjusted for comfort and volume.
• Use the erasable noteboard for quick notes during Re-tell Lecture, Summarize Spoken Text, and dictation tasks.
• Once you move past a question you cannot go back, so manage your time per task.

Managing Nerves During Speaking

Because the room may have others speaking at the same time, do not be distracted by background voices. Focus only on your own screen and microphone. Speak at a natural, steady pace, and start as soon as the recording begins so you do not lose time to silence.

Use this the morning of your test:

• Booking confirmation details (saved or memorised)
• Arrive 30 minutes early
