Listening, in your notes

Listening is the longest and most varied section in PTE Academic — 8 question types in 30–45 minutes. It's also the section where note-taking discipline matters more than English ability. This guide covers every task with templates, examples and a 2026 prep plan.

Top priorities for 2026

  • Master Write from Dictation — it's the highest-weight Listening task. 3 perfect WFDs can lift Listening by 10+ points.
  • Build a personal note-taking system. The two-column method (keywords + numbers) works for SST and HCS.
  • Train auditory memory with daily shadowing — 15 minutes of TED Talk shadowing rebuilds Listening faster than theory.
  • Listen for signal phrases ('firstly', 'in conclusion', 'however') — they mark exactly the points scorers want to hear.
  • Practise with diverse accents (British, American, Australian, Indian) — PTE audio rotates speakers in 2026.

Where Listening contributes

PTE uses integrated scoring — your listening answers feed multiple skill scores.

  • Listening score: All 8 tasks contribute
  • Writing score: SST, Fill Blanks, WFD
  • Reading score: HCS, HIW
  • Spelling / Grammar: Enabling skills — every typed response
