Reading, in your notes

Reading is the most efficiency-driven section in PTE Academic. With only 30 minutes for around 13–18 questions, your time per task matters as much as your skill. This guide breaks down each task with strategy, common traps and a preparation plan tuned for 2026.

Top priorities for 2026

  • Master the timing rule: 1.5–2 minutes per question average. Re-order Paragraphs and RW Fill Blanks deserve more time; MCSA needs less.
  • Build a strong collocation bank — 60% of Reading questions reward natural word pairings (e.g., 'make a decision', 'pose a threat').
  • For Re-order Paragraphs, find the topic sentence first, then chain by pronouns and connectors.
  • In Multiple Choice, eliminate before you select. Two options can usually be cut in 10 seconds.
  • Read the questions before the passage on long-text tasks — saves 30+ seconds of re-reading.

Where Reading contributes

PTE uses integrated scoring — your reading answers feed multiple skill scores.

Every Reading task, one card each

Each guide includes templates, examples, scoring breakdown and a 4-week prep plan.

  1. Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks — Drop-down menus with multiple word options for each blank. Tests grammar + vocabulary + collocation. (Very high — feeds Reading + Writing; ~2 min per question) Practise Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks
  2. Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers — Choose 2 or 3 correct answers from 5–7 options. Negative marking — wrong picks subtract. (Medium — Reading only; ~2 min per question) Practise Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers
  3. Re-order Paragraphs — Drag 4–5 jumbled paragraphs into the correct logical order. High-leverage if you spot the topic sentence. (High — Reading only; ~2 min per question) Practise Re-order Paragraphs
  4. Reading: Fill in the Blanks — Drag-and-drop words into blanks in a passage. Tests vocabulary, collocation and context. (High — Reading only; ~2 min per question) Practise Reading: Fill in the Blanks
  5. Multiple Choice, Single Answer — Choose 1 correct answer from 4–5 options. Quickest task — no negative marking. (Low — Reading only; ~1.5 min per question) Practise Multiple Choice, Single Answer
