Canada now accepts PTE Core for economic immigration through Express Entry, giving applicants a fast, computer-based alternative to IELTS General Training and CELPIP. But IRCC does not use the 10 to 90 PTE scale directly. Instead, your PTE Core scores are converted into Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels, and those levels drive your eligibility and your CRS points.

First, Use PTE Core (Not PTE Academic)

For Express Entry economic programs, IRCC accepts PTE Core, not PTE Academic. If you take PTE Academic for Express Entry, your result will not be accepted. This is the most important thing to get right before you book.

CLB 7 (the eligibility floor): Most Express Entry programs, including the Federal Skilled Worker Program, require a minimum of CLB 7 in all four skills. In PTE Core terms that means roughly Listening 60, Reading 60, Writing 69, and Speaking 68.

CLB 9 (the points sweet spot): This is where the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) rewards you most generously. Reaching CLB 9 in all skills unlocks the top language points and, just as importantly, the skill transferability bonuses that combine language with education and experience. Many successful candidates target CLB 9 specifically.

How CLB Affects Your CRS Points

The CRS awards points for your first official language in two ways:

1. Core language points: More points for each higher CLB level, in every skill.
2. Skill transferability bonuses: Extra points when strong language (CLB 9) combines with your education or work experience.

The jump from CLB 8 to CLB 9 is one of the most valuable moves in the entire CRS, because it boosts both your core points and your transferability points at the same time. If you are close to CLB 9, the effort to push past the threshold usually pays off heavily in your ranking.

A Smart Preparation Strategy

1. Take a full PTE Core mock test to find your current CLB in each skill.
2. Identify which skills sit below your target CLB.
3. Prioritise Writing, since it has the highest thresholds and is usually the bottleneck.
4. Practise tasks that lift multiple skills at once, such as dictation and summarizing.
5. Aim a few marks above each threshold so a small dip on test day does not drop your CLB.
