Templates you can adapt
Adapt these — never recite verbatim. Pearson's 2026 model flags identical, memorised openings.
Pre-listen strategy
BEFORE audio plays:
1. Read the question stem.
2. Read all options. Identify the keyword that distinguishes each.
3. Predict which 2 are most likely correct.
DURING audio:
- Listen for the keywords identified.
- Mark the most likely answer.
AFTER audio:
- Eliminate 2 obviously wrong options.
- Pick the most directly supported answer.
- Don't second-guess. Move on.
Worked examples
- Prompt
- Audio: lecture on photosynthesis. Question: 'What is the main product of photosynthesis?' A) Carbon dioxide B) Glucose C) Water D) Nitrogen
- Strong response
- B
- Why it works
- Glucose is the energy product of photosynthesis. A and C are inputs/by-products; D is unrelated.
Tips & tricks for 2026
- Read the options before audio plays. Saves you 30+ seconds of recall.
- Watch for option pairs that paraphrase each other — usually one is right, one is the trap.
- Cap MCSA at 60 seconds total. Don't over-spend.
- If unsure, pick the option with the most conservative wording.
- Practise on PTEAce daily to build pattern recognition.
Common mistakes
- Not reading options before audio — losing the prediction advantage.
- Selecting on familiarity ('I remember those words') instead of meaning.
- Spending 2+ minutes deliberating on a 1-mark task.
- Missing 'NOT' or 'EXCEPT' in the question stem.
Your 4-week prep plan
- Week 1: Practise pre-reading options. Drill 5 MCSAs daily.
- Week 2: Time-control — 60-second cap per question.
- Week 3: Drill on PTEAce; review every wrong answer for trap pattern.
- Week 4: Mock-test conditions. Aim for 100% accuracy.
